How to tell if your newborn is getting enough milk: How often should I feed my newborn baby?

Let your baby be your guide, and feed him as often as he wants to feed. There's no need to set up a breastfeeding routine during the first few days and weeks.

On the first day, your baby will probably feed at least three to four times. After the first sleepy day or two have passed, your baby may seem hungry most of the time. And he probably is, since he'll digest a feed within a couple of hours.

At this point, your baby will probably want to breastfeed at least eight times a day. Though he could feed a lot more than that, such as every hour or so . By the end of the first week, his feeds will probably have settled down to six to eight a day.

There's no maximum number of feeds a day when you're demand-feeding in the early days and weeks. The more your baby feeds, the more milk your breasts will be stimulated to produce .

It's normal for newborn babies to want to feed very frequently. If you meet your baby's demands by offering your breast, you'll produce more milk. Topping-up with formula during the first six weeks can reduce your milk supply, as your body won't get the signals from your baby feeding to make more milk.

Breastfeeding for beginners: Can I breastfeed after I go back to work?

If you're going back to work, it doesn't mean you have to stop breastfeeding. If your workplace has a nursery, you may be able to visit your baby during the working day, and breastfeed her as usual.

If you can't visit your baby during the day, you may want to express milk. Or you may choose to breastfeed only when you are with your baby, and give her formula milk during the day (mixed feeding).

Let your employer know in writing if you want to breastfeed after you return to work, so a risk assessment can be carried out. This is to make sure that your workplace is safe for a breastfeeding mum.

It's good news for employers, too. Mums who are supported to carry on breastfeeding after they return to work take less time off. And some research suggests that exclusively breastfed babies are less likely to be ill than babies who are formula-fed.

Breastfeeding for beginners: What should I buy for breastfeeding?

Buy at least two or three comfortable breastfeeding or nursing bras so your breasts are properly supported. These have hooks or zips that you can easily undo when your baby needs to feed.

Make sure that your bras fit properly, and that any flaps open completely. If only a small part of your breast is exposed, the bra may press on breast tissue and lead to blocked ducts or mastitis.

You may prefer to wait to buy bras until after your baby is born, to make sure that they will fit you perfectly. But bear in mind that getting out of the house with a newborn isn't easy, so think about going in late pregnancy. Many department stores have staff who are trained to fit nursing bras after 36 weeks of pregnancy.

You may find that your breasts have a tendency to leak, as even another baby's cry or the sight of a baby can stimulate milk flow. Keep a supply of washable or disposable breast pads handy, and consider buying a light-weight nursing bra for night-time, so you can wear breast pads while you sleep. If you're planning to express your breastmilk, you may want to consider buying a breast pump.

Breastfeeding for beginners: How do I start breastfeeding?

How can I prepare for breastfeeding?

Staying healthy is as much as you can do to prepare your body for breastfeeding. But learning as much as you can about breastfeeding before your baby is born will help you when the time comes.

Read how to prepare for breastfeeding, and encourage your partner to learn about it too, so he's ready to support you.

How do I start breastfeeding?

Feeds can take anything from five minutes to 40 minutes, so find a comfortable place before you start. In the early days of breastfeeding, when you're still trying to get the hang of it, creating the right atmosphere is important.
If you're easily distracted by noise, find somewhere quiet. If you tend to get bored, you may want to feed with the radio or television on, but only if breastfeeding is going well. Try different spots until you find what works for you.
Hold your baby in a position that won't make your arms and back ache. Have cushions or pillows nearby to support you or your baby. Laid-back breastfeeding involves lying on your back, so that your baby can rest on your body, while your hands are free to support her. Or try the cradle hold, which means cradling your baby across your chest, raised up on a cushion or pillow. It depends on what's most comfortable for you.
Get yourself and your baby in a relaxed position before you start feeding. Pay attention to how your breasts feel when your baby latches on. She should take in a big mouthful of breast tissue.
If you have large breasts, you may find it more comfortable to lie on your side while feeding, or you may want to try holding your baby under your arm in a rugby ball position.
If latching on hurts, break the suction by gently inserting your little finger between your baby's gums and your nipple, and try again. Once your baby latches on properly, she'll be able to do the rest.

Breastfeeding for beginners: How long will I be breastfeeding for?

The Department of Health recommends that your baby has only breastmilk for the first six months of her life. It also recommends that you carry on breastfeeding after your baby has started on solid foods, until the end of her first year and beyond, if you'd like to.

Continuing to breastfeed while introducing solid foods to your baby may benefit her immune system. She may also be less likely to develop health conditions such as coeliac disease and type 1 diabetes.

Most mums aim to breastfeed for between three months and 12 months, and some choose to breastfeed beyond the first year (extended breastfeeding). A lot depends on your individual circumstances and how you feel about it.

Breastfeeding for beginners: Is it true that breast milk is the best?

If you've just started breastfeeding, you're doing the right thing for you and your baby.

But if breastfeeding doesn't come naturally at first, don't worry. Plenty of new mums and babies have to practise and persevere until they get the hang of it.

Is it true that breast is best?

Yes, breastmilk is the best food for your baby. It's the healthiest way to feed her.

Breastmilk is a complete food. It contains at least 400 nutrients, as well as hormones and disease-fighting compounds, that aren't present in formula milk. Its nutritional makeup even adjusts to your baby's needs as she grows.

Feeding your baby only breastmilk for up to six months (exclusive breastfeeding) is particularly good for her. It can improve your baby’s cognitive development. So being breastfed could even make her more intelligent.

Babies who are exclusively breastfed from birth are also much less likely to be ill in their first year of life. Being breastfed may help your baby to fend off illnesses such as:
We can't say that exclusive breastfeeding reduces the risk of children ever developing eczema. But babies who are breastfed for any period of time do tend to have lower rates of severe eczema than babies who were always formula-fed. It's also possible that breastfeeding delays when your child first develops eczema.

Breastfeeding helps to build a special bond between you and your baby. And in the long-term, breastfeeding may help your baby to stay healthy. Studies have shown that adults who were breastfed as babies, when compared with those who were formula-fed:
  • had lower blood pressure
  • had lower cholesterol levels
  • were less likely to become obese
  • were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes
Breastfeeding is good for you, too, and may help you to lose weight. In the long term, it also helps to:
  • lower your risk of breast cancer
  • protect against ovarian cancer before the menopause
  • reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes

记得曾经看过一张照片,上面写着“If you have a problem, FACE it, don't FACEBOOK it!”

Establishing good sleep habits: newborn to three months

Give him a chance to fall asleep on his own

When your baby's between six weeks and eight weeks old, you can teach him how to fall asleep on his own. Put him down when he's sleepy, but still awake. Stay with him if you wish, but be prepared to do the same every time he wakes at night.

How you settle your baby to sleep is important. If you rock him to sleep every night for the first eight weeks, he will expect the same later on. If you leave him alone to sleep, he will expect that, too.

Some experts advise against rocking or feeding your baby to sleep. It's up to you to decide what sort of routine best suits you and your baby.

If you want to establish a predictable pattern, you'll need to adopt the same strategy every night.

Establishing good sleep habits: newborn to three months

Teach him the difference between night and day

Your baby may be a night owl and still be wide awake when you're ready to turn in. Once your baby is about two weeks old, you can start to teach him the difference between night and day.

In the daytime, when he's alert:

  • Change his clothes when he wakes to signal the start of a new day.
  • Play with him as much as you can.
  • Make daytime feeds social. Chat and sing as you feed him.
  • Keep the house and his room light and bright.
  • Let him hear everyday noises, such as the radio or washing machine.
  • Wake him gently if he nods off during a feed.
  • At night-time:
  • Stay quiet when you feed him.
  • Keep lights and noise low, and don't talk to him too much.
  • Change him into his pyjamas to signal the end of the day.

All this should help your baby to start to understand that night-time is for sleeping.

Good Friday

Minicko wishes all a very blessed Good Friday.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.(John 3:16-17, NKJV)

Establishing good sleep habits: newborn to three months

How should I encourage good sleep habits?

Your baby can develop good sleep habits from as early as six weeks. Here are a few tactics you can use to help your baby to settle.

Recognise the signs that mean he's tired

For the first six weeks to eight weeks, your baby probably won't be able to stay up for more than two hours at a time. If you wait much longer than that to put him down, he'll be overtired and won't nod off easily.

During your baby's first three months, learn the signs that he's sleepy, such as if he:
-       rubs his eyes
-          flicks his ear with his hand
-          develops faint, dark circles under his eyes
-          whines and cries at the slightest provocation
-          stares blankly into space
-          yawns and stretches a lot
-          loses interest in people and his toys
-          becomes quiet and still

He may also turn his face away from moving objects or people, or bury his face in your chest.

If you spot these or any other signs of sleepiness, try putting him down in his cot or Moses basket. You'll soon develop a sixth sense about your baby's daily rhythms and patterns, and know instinctively when he's ready for a nap.

Establishing good sleep habits: newborn to three months

What will my baby's sleep pattern be?

Newborn babies sleep a lot. Expect your baby to be asleep for up to 18 hours over the course of 24 hours in his first few weeks. But he won't sleep for more than three hours or four hours at a time, day or night. This unfortunately means that you and your partner can expect some sleepless nights, especially at first.

This is a necessary phase for your baby and it won't last long, though it may seem like an eternity while you're sleep-deprived.

Your baby’s sleep cycles are far shorter than yours. He'll spend more time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which is a light, easily disturbed sleep. This is necessary for the changes that are happening in his brain.

Once he is between six weeks and eight weeks your baby will probably sleep for shorter spells during the day and longer periods at night. But he'll still wake up to feed during the night. He'll have more deep, non-REM sleep and less light sleep.

It's possible that your baby may sleep through the night at eight weeks old. But it's more likely that your nights will be interrupted for at least the first few months. If your aim is to get your baby to sleep through the night, encouraging clear habits from the start will help.

Can I store my baby’s feed for her to finish later?

Unless you're using ready-made milk, always make a fresh feed for your baby. Don't store bottles of baby formula milk that you've already made. This is because bacteria can grow rapidly in formula milk kept at room temperature and can grow slowly in the fridge.

Having said that, there may be times when you just have to make up a feed in advance and keep it in the fridge. This may be the case if you have twins, or if you're out for the day, or your baby goes to childcare. Read more about storing formula in the fridge safely. Your midwifeand health visitor can also give you practical tips on how to cope.

When your baby has finished feeding, throw away any leftover formula. If your baby hasn’t fed from a bottle at all, throw it away within two hours. It may seem a waste, but it's healthier and safer for your baby that way.

How do I use ready-made formula milk?

You can buy ready-made formula milk in cartons. These are more expensive than powder formula, but they can save time and are convenient when you're out and about.

All you need to do is pour as much as you need into a sterilised bottle, and warm it up. Or you could just give it to your baby at room temperature if she likes it like this. When you open the packet, make sure that your hands are clean and you use clean scissors, if you need to.

If there's any ready-made formula left in the carton, use it within 24 hours. Make sure the cut corner is folded down and store the carton in the main part of the fridge where it’s coldest. The temperature of the fridge should be five degrees C or less.

How do I make my baby’s feed?

It's essential that you measure the milk powder and water accurately. If the feed is too weak, your baby will be hungry and won’t put on weight. If the feed is too strong, your baby will become very thirsty and dehydrated.

To make formula feed for your baby, follow these steps:

- Fill the kettle with fresh tap water. Don’t use artificially softened water, which will be too salty, or water that has already been boiled before. Only use bottled water if you’re abroad. A change in tap water could give your baby a tummy upset, because of the difference in minerals and purifying chemicals in the water. If you are having to use bottled water, you'll still need to boil it first.

- Bring the water to the boil and allow it to cool for no more than 30 minutes. It needs to be hot enough to kill any bacteria in the powder, but not boiling hot. If you have a thermometer, the water should be at least 70 degrees C. Take care, though, as that’s still hot enough to scald you.

- Read the instructions on the formula packet to check the amount of water needed for each bottle and the number of scoops of powder to use.

- Pour the required amount of water into the bottle. It's important to put the water in first, because you need to measure it accurately.

- Stand the bottle on the countertop and crouch down to check the water level. This way you can see if the water level is actually in line with the mark on the side of the bottle.

- Add the right number of scoops of powder to the bottle using the scoop provided. It will measure just the right amount. Loosely fill the scoop and level it off using the back of a clean knife, or the leveller provided in the pack. You don't need to press the powder down for each scoop.

- Place a sterilised lid or teat on the neck of the bottle and screw the retaining ring on tightly. If you're using a teat, hold the teat on its edge as you put it on, or use sterilised tongs.

- Put a sterilised cap on the bottle and shake it carefully until the powder has dissolved completely.

- Before feeding your baby, test the temperature by tipping a little milk out of the teat on to the inside of your wrist. It should feel just warm, not hot. If you need to, cool the milk by holding the bottle, with a cap covering the teat, under cold running water.

Now you’re ready to give your baby her bottle.

What do I prepare for my baby's feed?

Before you make your baby’s feed, follow these steps:

Clean and sterilise all of your baby’s feeding equipment. This includes bottles, teats, lids, retaining rings, caps, and the manufacturer's scoop that comes with the formula milk.

Clean and disinfect the work surface you're going to use.

Wash and dry your hands.

Put a sterilised bottle on the clean surface.

Use sterilised tongs to place the sterilised teat, lid, retaining ring, and cap out ready, preferably on the upturned lid of the steriliser.

Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to make your baby’s feed.
